Cranial Osteopathy

Cranial osteopathy, or more formally, ‘osteopathy in the cranial field’, is a methodology of treatment first discovered by Dr William G. Sutherland D.O, an American osteopath in the early to mid-1900s. This discovery came after observing a dis-articulated skull, and noting the relationship between the cranial bones,

“Beveled… like the gills of a fish… indicating articular mobility… for a respiratory mechanism.”

He dedicated the rest of his life to researching and teaching the concept, based on the subtle motion palpable within the cranial and pelvic bones. This included motion of the central nervous system (CNS), its membranes (dura) and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).

In the 1970s, another American osteopath, Dr James S. Jealous D.O, built upon the later workings of Dr Sutherland. After studying the work of pioneering German embryologist, Erich Blechschmidt, Dr Jealous made the important link between the forces of growth and development in the embryo, and the regenerative/restorative forces evident throughout life. He termed this the ‘biodynamic’ view of osteopathy in the cranial field.

Working with these therapeutic, homeostatic forces, the osteopath is able to communicate with the reorganisation of the body as a whole. This is why the ‘cranial’ term is a misnomer, as treatment can be applied to any ‘part’ of the body, and most importantly, linking it the whole.
